England assistant coach Andy Robinson has backed England to win the forward battle on Saturday and go on to upset France’s Grand Slam hopes.

The French pack has been in prolific form during the Six Nations to date, while England’s has struggled.

But Robinson told BBC Sport: “Our forwards are still as good as they were at the World Cup.

“We may have struggled with the on line dating tip but our scrummaging performances have been really good in every game.”

Hooker Steve Thompson has regularly struggled to find his target men on his throw, which was at its worst in the 19-13 defeat to Ireland.

Despite that, Robinson remains upbeat.

He said: “Against Italy I thought our scrum was outstanding and against Scotland we again
scrummaged really well. Even against Ireland, when we were dire in the line-out, we were
strong in the scrums.”

Against Wales a week ago, England were notably boosted by the arrival of dating free man relationship tip prop
Julian White in the last 10 minutes.

And there have been question marks about the fitness of the player he replaced, Phil Vickery.

But Robinson insisted he was happy with his front three and said: “Vickery has shown throughout the tournament that his fitness is there. I’m very confident in what he can do
this weekend.”

The former Bath coach is familiar with the majority of the French pack from the World Cup
semi-final, which England won 24-7.

replaces the retired Raphael Ibanez at hooker and Pascal Pape is selected at lock.

Home advantage

Robinson, though, believes France’s forwards are always “formidable”, whoever they select.

“Playing France is always a challenge,” he said. “It always has been and always will be.

In the fourth week of our holiday series, travel expert Peter Nunn gives some top tips on booking package holidays and how to complain if things go wrong.

With Euro 2004 about to kick off, and Wimbledon and the Olympics around the corner, it could be a good reason to stay at home and not go away.

And with more people staying at home, that means lots of bargain holidays left on the shelf - or does it?

The managing director of Thomson Holidays, Chris Mottershead, says: “There are approximately as many holidays left to sell this year as there were last year, which means I think that we’ve got the right number available.

“But there are still a great many deals available out there for customers, dating funny tip outside of the peak.

“Prices will inevitably be as high this year as they were last year, so if you’re looking for a deal, you’re better to look outside of the holiday periods.”

Stress

Peter says there are some big discounts to be found if you shop around.

There are between four and five million holidays still to be sold, and if you’re not restricted to black dating advices free service dates, your flexibility could save you money.

If you do need to take your holiday during the peak-time school breaks however, it’s better to book early if you’re after a particular choice.

When you book your holiday also depends on your own personal stress levels - how would you feel if the dating advices reciprocal
deal you’ve waited for leaves from a different airport than the one you want?

Internet

Another option is to book online.

More and more people are now booking their holiday on the internet, as many people are looking for a better priced deal than they’re being offered by their travel agent.

But Thomson’s Chris Mottershead says: “I would dispute whether internet holidays are cheaper than we can sell them for because we have huge buying power as the largest travel company in the UK.

“Obviously there will inevitably always be opportunities to save money,” he admits.

But “what people should do is go through all the channels… whether you want to go through a travel agent, whether you want to go on the web, it’s actually about what you want to do and how you want to book - not about whether you get the best price.”

Peter says that you really need to weigh up what’s best for you.

The internet can be more online dating advices jewish services but some people like to get advice and a friendly chat while they’re booking their holiday.

Complaining

Once you’ve booked your holiday and then eventually arrive at your destination, you might be dating advices com with what you find.

Shoddy accommodation, substandard catering or nearby building work are just some of the horrors we’ve all heard stories about in the past.

Peter’s advice is to follow the steps below to ensure you make the best of a bad situation:

Talk to your rep

Get evidence together to back up your claim

Take it up when you’re back in the UK

Then enjoy the holiday as best you can

And giving the holiday company’s point of view, Chris says: “We are going to do our utmost to put it right but of course inevitably in some cases, it’ll be impossible to resolve people’s issues.

In that case, we will take it up with the customer and refund or whatever needs to be, to put the position right.”

Erectile dysfunction treatment

Marks & Spencer has received support from shareholders at its annual meeting, piling pressure on Philip Green to abandon his takeover approach.

Signs of backing for M&S came from private investors, despite Mr Green’s request for them to use the AGM to voice support for his proposed offer.

Now Mr Green must decide whether or not to ditch the 9.1bn ($16.9bn) offer.

Earlier, M&S’s largest shareholder, US firm Brandes, urged the company to open its books to Mr Green, but it declined.

In a statement, M&S chairman Paul Myners said the firm believed it would be “wrong for the board… to
allow due diligence access”.

Mr Green estimates he has the backing of more than 20% of shareholders, with that figure including the Brandes stake as well as stocks owned by Schroder Investment Management.

On Tuesday night, Mr Green told BBC Radio Five Live that the meeting in London would be a great chance for investors to pressure the board into accepting his 9.1bn ($16.9bn) offer.

New direction

On Monday, M&S unveiled a long-awaited company-wide shake up.

The new strategy includes plans to return 2.3bn to shareholders, sell its financial services business and buy the popular Per Una clothing business from designer George Davies.

Recently-arrived chief executive Stuart Rose, a former associate of Mr Green, said his aim was to give M&S “back to our customers”.

But not all investors appear to have been won over by the shake-up plans.

During the interview with BBC Radio Five Live, Mr Green claimed to have the backing of about 25% of M&S shareholders.

Big noise

Mr Green was hoping that a concerted effort by investors at the AGM would be enough to get his offer approved by the board.

“If the shareholders out there are really interested in the board dialoguing with us, that’s their moment of opportunity to tell this board that they don’t think they are conducting this situation in the right way,” he told the BBC’s business editor Jeff Randall.

However, some analysts were sceptical about Mr Green’s chances of garnering enough support.

Standard Life Dating advices direct edinburgh
, which owns about 2% of M&S, said on Tuesday it was rejecting the proposed bid because it personels dating advices the company’s recovery prospects.

Investors meet

Among small shareholders gathered for the dating advices for blacks annual meeting, sentiment appeared to be tipping in favour of Stuart Rose.

One shareholder, Rob Epps, told BBC News Online: “Do you want a quick fix or do you want long term investment? I think I’ll stay with M&S personally.”

Another shareholder Jairan Pewardo said: “I’d prefer it to remain the way it is. With good management I don’t see why it shouldn’t improve.”

But another investor, who preferred to remain anonymous said: “I’m here to get rid of the board. I’m all for Green - I just don’t trust the others.”

Though many of the 3,000 shareholders attending the annual meeting appeared to support Mr Rose, some were critical that M&S had not kept them up to date on the takeover situation.

One investor said the company should thank Mr Green for spurring management to focus on the business.

They were also critical that overseas investors such as major shareholder Brandes had missed the AGM.

“It’s disgraceful that they are not here … we don’t want absent shareholders deciding the future of this company,” said shareholder Mr Edwards-Simmons.

“I prefer an M&S that is looking through Rose-tinted spectacles than one that is going Green around the gills,” said Barry Hyman, another shareholder.

Shareholders also vented their spleen against the pay-offs to ousted chief executive Roger Holmes and chairman Luc Vandevelde, seen by many shareholders as “rewards for failure”.

So when he’s not rooting for club member Colin Montgomerie, whose father Dunsmuir plays golf with every week, he will be thinking about getting out on the course on Monday - hopefully, to recreate Monty’s victory march up the 18th.

The members haven’t been allowed on the course for the last two weeks as the R&A, broadcasters and tented village brigade have been let loose on their beloved links.

Don’t feel too sorry for them, though, they’ve been able to satisfy their golf cravings at teen dating advices services online
courses like Turnberry, Prestwick, Barassie and the Gailes links.

But it’s the Championship Course on “The Breezy Links o’ Troon” that they miss, and Dunsmuir is no different.

“As long as it doesn’t rain on Monday, things will get back to normal very quickly. It’s a very resilient course,” the captain said.

“We’re all itching to test ourselves on the championship set-up. And it’s great playing with the grandstands still up - we all get to dream a little.”

Dunsmuir would also like to relax a little. This week is just the culmination of a process that started two years ago when the R&A’s course architect visited Troon to make his dating advices speed virginia west for the set-up.

The Troon resident is far too discrete to reveal what those suggestions were, and stressed that the R&A is the perfect tenant.

“We have a great relationship with the R&A,” he said. “They know there is a balance to strike: we are a members’ club, and this is an area of special scientific interest.”

In the end, only 96 yards were added to the course that hosted the 1997 Open, but there were 10 new bunkers added.

“Scottish bunkers, too. Not the type you can play seven-irons from. These are ones you have to play out sideways,” said Dunsmuir.

“But our members aren’t going to worry about a new bunker 300 yards down the fairway. Unless they play two bad shots, that is.”

And he was quick to point out that any short-term top online dating advices sites to the 126-year-old club’s equilibrium is more than worth it in terms of prestige, revenue and the wealth it brings into the area.

“I can’t verify the figures, but it is said that this week will bring up to 50m into the local economy. I live locally, and people are always coming up to me to say how pleased they are to have the Open back at Troon,” he said.

“Hosting the Open is an enormous honour. And for the last year Royal Troon has served as a magnet for golfers wanting to play all the great courses in this area.

“This year was our turn, but other years it’s Turnberry, and Prestwick is always very popular because of its history. But all our neighbours are great courses.”

And with that, the diplomatic Dunsmuir disappeared for a lunch with the captains and captains’ wives from all those clubs.

He did, however, give me a tip before he left.

“If the wind keeps blowing in this direction (from the west) it will favour a left-hander. When it blows like this it is hard on the right-handers on the back nine,” he said.

A left-hander? You work it out.

The site, at a former quarry at Cilgwyn near Caernarfon, was earmarked for closure in 2007, but Gwynedd Council is considering extending its use.

The council, whose environment committee discuss the plan on Thursday, said a number of sites were being considered for waste disposal.

The public have until 28 October to lodge any objections to the proposals.

Plans to extend the tip’s working life for up to 20 years are included in the draft version of the new Gwynedd Council unitary free bbw online dating advices

But some people living near to the former slate quarry have objected.

Sandra Hilton and her husband Anthony, who live in the house closest to the tip, said the landfill site contributes to problems of pollution in the area.

“There is litter all over the mountain. We have been plagued by flies and have cockroaches in the house - I found one this morning,” said Mrs Hilton.

Local councillor Dilwyn Lloyd is supporting those campaigning to get the site closed.

“On a windy day rubbish is blown right over Cilgwyn mountain into the nearby village of Carmel,” he said.
The tip is run by waste dating man tip younger company Cwmni Gwastraff Mn/Arfon.

Possible sites

The Environment Agency has decided not to grant the company a licence to continue the disposal of non-hazardous waste at the site.

A Gwynedd Council spokesman said, however, that an appeal has already been lodged.

“The council has dating advices sites review
consultants to consider dating newsletter tip sites within the county for the future treatment of waste and disposal of residual waste,” he said.

“These possible sites, which include Cilgwyn, are identified within the draft version of the unitary development plan.

“As part of the statutory consultation period which runs until 28 October, members of the public are invited to comment on the proposed changes to the plan,” he added.

Gwynedd Council’s environment committee discussed the plan on Thursday, but deferred any decision until a later date.
A public meeting has been arranged in Carmel village hall on 14 October.

England have struggled on the field since Martin Johnson’s retirement.

But Kay, who has been dropped by England for the Wallabies game, told BBC Sport: “Martin’s new to the role and will go on to do a great job.

“He’s a very similar captain to Martin Johnson and there’s no reason why he can’t go on to enjoy similar success.”

Johnson inspired England to World Cup success as well as leading the Lions on a bisexual dating advices site tour of South Africa in 1997.

Corry is still a relative novice as England skipper but captained them to victory against Italy and Scotland towards the end of the Six Nations.

Kay said: “Martin’s a great friend of mine and I hope single dating tip for him that things go well against Australia on Saturday.

“Like Johnno (Martin Johnson), he’s not a big-talking captain telling you what to do. But he plays very dating internet safety tip from the front and expects people to follow that lead.”

Corry was one of the star performers in English rugby last season, which was capped by him being named Zurich Dating advices internet london
player of the year and winning the players’ player of the year award.

His club colleague Kay, however, has fallen out of favour with the international side and will instead face Gloucester in the league this weekend.

The 29-year-old said: “I hate not being involved with England and I’d love to play for England again but I can’t worry about that.

“You can get in a spell worrying about it too much and then you don’t perform at the top level. You panic about making mistakes but I need to put that behind me.

“I just have to do my best for Leicester, enjoy my game - which I’m doing more than ever - and just hope I get picked for the Six Nations.”

Kay’s match against Gloucester clashes with England’s international but he insists he will be in the stands at Twickenham to watch the games against New Zealand and Samoa.

The Tigers lock admits he “is not quite there” in terms of his best form and joked “I need to stay on the pitch for the full 80 minutes to impress coach Andy Robinson” in reference to a european women dating advices of sin-binnings in his last three games.

But he insisted: “The first one was a penalty - nothing more - and the second wasn’t even a penalty. That said, in the third instance I was fortunate not to be sent off.

“Aside from that, I’m near the top of my game and hope it catches people’s attention.”

Two former Daily Mirror “City Slickers” financial journalists have been convicted of a share tipping scam.

James Hipwell, 39, was found guilty of professionals dating advices to breach the Financial Services Act.

Southwark Crown Court heard Hipwell made 41,000 in six months by buying, tipping and then selling shares.

A private investor, Terry Shepherd, was convicted of a similar offence, while Hipwell’s colleague, Anil Bhoyrul, had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

Hipwell, from London, and Shepherd, from Surrey, denied the charges.

The men will be sentenced at a later date and could be jailed for up to seven years and face danger of online dating advices orders. They will remain on bail.

Commenting on the case, competition minister Gerry Sutcliffe said: “Today’s verdict should send out a clear message that the government will take action against those who break the law for their own financial gain.

“The DTI Department of Trade and Industry is committed to establishing and maintaining fair markets.”

Defending himself against the allegations that he had created a false impression of the value of shares, Hipwell earlier told the court he stood by his tips.

Driving analogy

And he insisted former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan encouraged his City Slickers columnists to buy the shares they were tipping.

“Morgan said if we were in the business of tipping shares he was happy for us to trade and even used the analogy along the lines of, you would not learn to drive from somebody who had never been in a car. You would not learn from a manual.”

The court heard Mr Morgan had himself bought shares - said in court to be as much as 67,000 - in Sir Alan Sugar’s technology firm Viglen, a day before they were tipped in the City Slickers column.

It was this tip, at the beginning of 2000 in a column entitled “Sugar to Head Next Gold Rush”, that led to Hipwell and Bhoyrul being dating tip for girl.

Their former editor was cleared by a DTI inquiry of any wrongdoing and backed by executives at Trinity Mirror.

But Mr Morgan was criticised by the Press Complaints Commission and the court heard Viglen’s PR adviser, Nick Hewer, say he had been asked by the editor to lie about the timing of a dating advices free service with a columnist.

Fired

Prosecutors said Hipwell and co-columnist Bhoyrul, of Sutton, Surrey, would first spend thousands of pounds on stock they planned to “ramp” - by uk dating advices it as “tip of the day” 24 hours later.

Then they would sell the holding at a profit as the price rose.

The “share-ramping” involved 44 separate incidents between 1 August 1999 and 29 February 2000, the court heard.

Shepherd was recruited by Hipwell and Bhoyrul - who now edits a magazine in Dubai - to take part in the scam, after contacting them through a message board.

The prosecution said Shepherd gained a profit of 17,000, and Bhoyrul 15,000 through the practice.

Hipwell and Bhoyrul were fired by the Mirror in 2000.

From Wednesday 15th February if you want to pay by debit or credit card in a shop you will almost certainly have to know your Personal Speed dating advices in york Number to make the on line dating tip.

We asked you for ideas for easy ways to remember your number.

Here are some of the best…

I use a name with four letters as I have a mobile phone with me most of the time it is easy then to remember the PIN.

For example, ‘NAME’ advice dating advices
as 6263. Easy!

You can always change your PIN to a easily remembered name.

Debbie.

Why not choose a rhyme, e.g. ‘Oh do be mine’ = 0239.

Alan, Hampshire.

I write mine on the card - but in code. I regard the four digits as a pair of birth years. I write down the initials of two people who I know were born close to those years followed by a + or - adjustment.

For example, let’s suppose, that my mother’s initials were AB and she was born in 1910, and my initials were JB and I was born in 1936, then a PIN of 1234 would be coded ‘AB+2,JB-2′
That means nothing to anyone else, but is easily advice dating free tip by me into my pin.

I also use this method to write them down in my diary. I suppose it could be decoded by another family member, but it is completely safe from free dating advices sites uk.

Keith, London.

Write it down in the form of a false telephone number. For instance, PIN number is 1234, my local dialling code is 01803, therefore the PIN gets lost in the false phone number, i.e.,
01803 123458 last two digits are my house number. But only I would know that.

Then write a name along side it and it looks even more like a phone number. Write it with other real phone numbers in you purse or wallet.

Jacqueline, Devon.

Use a memorable year, avoiding family birthdates. Best are historic dates, although not obvious ones like the Battle of Hastings.

Peter, Bedfordshire.

My age group, late sixties, has a couple of unforgettable sources for PINs.

Our Mum’s Co-op ‘divi’ number, which had to be quoted every time we were sent for a loaf, or a pint of milk, and our Nation Service number.

Neither of these easily guessed or ever forgotten.

John, Cambridgeshire.

“A warning may come quite unexpectedly. We will now tell you what to do if a warning sounds when you are at home, and then we will explain what to do if you are out of doors. First, if you are at home. If an attack is imminent, you will hear the attack sound like this:

(The familiar WWII air raid siren sounds, and there is a visual representation of it - a swelling collection of vibrating strings. Like a doll’s house, the front of the building disappears and shows the layout. One room in the middle is highlighted.)

“So take cover at once. Send your young children to the fallout room, then go quickly and turn off the gas, and the electricity at the mains. Close down stoves, damp down fires, shut windows, and draw curtains. Then go to your fallout room and stay there.
If the fallout warnings are heard, they will be like these:

(Three bangs, followed by three bells, followed by three whistles, each with a visual representation)

“You should now move yourself and your family to the safest area in your fallout room. That is, you should get inside your inner refuge and stay there. After two days, the danger from fallout will get less. But don’t take any risks by contact with it.
The longer you stay in your refuge the better it will be for you. Listen to your radio. Stay where you are and keep listening to your radio.

“Now this is what you should do if you are out of doors when the warning sounds. Take cover at once when you hear the attack sound. If you cannot reach home in 10 minutes, take cover in the nearest building. If there is no building nearby, try to find some solid cover.

(Cut to drawing of man sitting under bridge.)

“If there is no solid cover, lie flat in a ditch or a hole, and cover your head face and your hands as fast as you can with some of your clothes. If you hear the fallout warning, seek the nearest and best cover as quickly as you can. But before entering the building or cover, brush or shake off any fallout dust you may have picked up and get rid of it. Change your outer clothing if you can. Stay under cover.

“When the all clear sounds, like this…

(Animation of vibrating strings again, this time green, and staying high pitched)

…it means that you are safe from attack or fallout for the time being and you can go outside again. But keep listening for further warnings or to your radio for further advice.

(Cut to caption of family and slogan Protect and Survive.)

Critics of the Protect and Survive campaign said it was an unrealistic projection of life post-Bomb. In particular the notion of shutting curtains as a protection, or that it might be safe to come out of a house after two days attracted ridicule, and in retrospect this vision of a post-apocalyptic world does seem almost as dated as the WWII sirens.

A modern audience might wonder what protection sitting under a bridge might give, and just how long people might have to wait for that “all clear” to be sounded.

Raymond Briggs’ classic graphic novel When the Wind Blows, first published in 1982, gave a terrifying portrayal of the futility of efforts to survive an attack. It was followed in 1984 by Mick Jackson’s film Threads, written by Barry Hines, about life in Sheffield after a nuclear attack.

Both gave a very different take on what people might expect after a bomb, and tapped into people’s fears of nuclear war, amid rising Cold War tensions.

But as an exercise in conveying information clearly and memorably these films are works of art. Seeing what the fallout warning would sound like, as well as hearing it, imprints the message clearly on the brain. And the portrayal of fallout itself, with its unsettling sound, both gives some explanation of what it is (bad stuff) and how to avoid it (stay in your refuge).

The man who deserves much of the credit for this is Richard Taylor, an animator who produced dozens of public information films throughout the 70s and 80s, including Jobs for Girls and Charley Says.

Throughout the 50s and 60s he says he was strongly opposed to nuclear weapons, and like others worried what a war would mean for his family.

“A lot of this advice was well intentioned but foolish,” he says now. “I don’t know if people really thought lying in a ditch would give any protection from a nuclear bomb. But I thought that if there was going to be any kind of nuclear war, it was obviously better to have some sort of official advice than nothing at all.”

The film’s final caption, in which the drawing of what is now known as a nuclear family (dad, mum, two children), embodies the message. The slogan Protect and Survive animates to wrap round the family. And as a little musical sequence reaches a harmonic resolution, the words become a solid line protecting the family - the same symbol used earlier in the film to symbolise the inner refuge. The signal is clear - follow our instructions and things might be all right.

Many people disagreed, of course, and the language of Protect and Survive was soon turned against it. Anti-nuclear campaigners adapted it to “Protest and Survive”, and Patrick Allen’s appearance on Two Tribes chillingly highlighted some of the advice from a subsequent film (”if your grandmother or any other member of your family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes”).

Watching this movie I take great comfort from the thought that someone had our protection in mind and prepared practical advice. To many other opinions on the subject were dating dating free free online tip either deliberitly or through fear and ignorance - and dating free man tip still are.
Ivan Farina,

“Dumbing Down” was invented to describe this nuclear war “information” film.I remember being terrified that its predecessor “War Games” might actually be shown to us when I was a sixth former, but this childlike public info film scared me more than “Threads” and “War Games” put together. This was because at the time nuclear war seemed so imminent, and the crude slightly amateurish feel of “Protect and Survive” made me feel it had been rushed into production as the unthinkable was about to happen….
patrick mcgowan, Cheltenham, England

This film obviously doesn’t think hard enough when it urges “The longer you stay in your refuge, the better for you”. While radioactive fallout is a great risk, surely thirst, hunger and disease are even worse, given that people have 10 minutes which would be better spent gathering food and water, rather than closing curtains and shutting off the mains.
S Murray, Chester, UK

I’ve got a great spoof on the original Protect and Survive booklet called “Meet Mr. Bomb”.
I don’t know if it’s still available - it’s as valuable a relic of the Cold War as the original.
nick, london uk

Nice article. Just wanted to point out that CND (in the figure of Peter Watkins) shredded the idea of a ’survivable’ limited nuclear exchange in the much more informative public education film, The War Game. This was in 1965, a full 10 years before Protect and Survive. One of its key points was that people were much worse off being dating hint and tip by lies about how to survive an attack, as they would be less engaged in efforts to avert such a conflict due to these false expectations. Thus, some official advice is not always better than none, as implied above. Why not do an article on this earlier and much more informative public information? The state does not define the limits of the public.
James, London

You mentioned that they gave advice to lie down or get under a bridge if out in the open. I seem to remember reading that this is because the initial blast releases different types of radiation that travel at different speeds and in straight lines and get stopped by certain types of material, thus if you wern’t in the immediate area of a blast, you could escape the initial radiation burst that does the most damage to human tissue.
Chris Keane, London

This is what Douglas Adams must have been satirising in ‘Hitchhikers’ Guide’, when the pub landlord asks Ford Prefect if lying down and putting a paper bag over his head will help during the impending destruction of the Earth. Ford’s answer is something like ‘no, but you can do it if you like.’
‘Protect and Survive’ seems just about as useful as that. I guess that the real point of it was to make the bodies easier to find and identify because at home - or at least to keep corpses off the streets and highways, and to give people something to do other than panic. For the average person without a deep level shelter, it wouldn’y have mattered if they’d stayed in their fallout room, or danced naked in the street - the radiation would have done for them pretty quick. And why is the blast not mentioned at all! As if your house would still be standing! And the cold-war air raid sirens in my town were on lam-posts and buildings. I doubt they’d have been working to sound the all-clear.
Graham Mallaghan, Canterbury

I remember we were shown this at school in about 1980. We had to take a slip home and get parental permission bewfore we were allowed to watch it - that’s how “serious” it was senn in those days. Scared me to death at the time, although I think I was probably quite numb to the threat of nuclear war. We lived with the possibility all the time - in my early teens I was convinced there would be a war before I was 20. Thankfully, people had more sense than I gave them credit for at the time.
Andy Greig, Milton Keynes, UK

I think it’s a little bit hard to laugh at the advice given in this film. Obviously, a nuclear explosion would have meant the end for people nearby, whatever they did. But at the margins of any blast - conventional or nuclear - there is a zone where being inside, under a bridge, or even in a ditch (and so below ground level) would mean the difference bewteen life and death. (And even the curtains point makes sense, when you realise it’s to stop laceration injuries from flying glass if your windows shattered.) OK, so if people had followed this advice most would have died anyway, but there would have been tens of thousands who would have survived - and surely that’s worth 3 minutes of anybody’s effort.
John, Brussels

Grew up during the 80s… and to this day my brother and I call tinned or dried food, “Food for the fall-out room”. Stop Look Listen is one of the best things you’ve ever done. Thanks.
Jane MacGregor, Epsom, UK

The film you highlighted is part of a series of about 9 I think. By far the most chilling is number 7 with its advice about how to handle casualties. Its advice is to wrap dead bodies in bin liners and… “… if you have been in the house for more than 5 days, take the body outside and bury it, in a shallow grave, clearly marking the spot”
Scary stuff!

James Coyle, London UK

I remember watching ‘Threads’ at school, they were playing this information on the TV in sheffield days before the attack.
That was a scary film, mind you, I was told if I’d seen Sheffield in 1985, then I would know why they chose it!
Graeme, Northwich, Cheshire

i think the best nuclear aftermath book is probably down to a sunless sea by david graham. The futility of the whole exercise in the event is clearly shown and this protect and survive film just goes to show that the government took us for fools. It may of course have in realisty meant that whitehall had no idea either!
Dave, Chatham UK

Your article says that the title ‘Protect and Survive’ was adapted by anti-nuclear protestors, who altered it to ‘Protest and Survive’. This is correct - but you should have noted that ‘Protest and Survive’ was, specifically, the title of a hugely influential pamphlet published circa 1980 by the distinguished left-wing historian, Edward Thompson (E.P.Thompson), who became a leading figure in the peace and anti-nuclear movbement of the 1980s.
Martin Ryle, Brighton

People regularly ridicule Protect & Survive, but this is largely due to their awe of the power of nuclear weapons. If you were ten miles from ‘ground zero’ then, yes, hiding in a ditch could very well mean the difference between being quite alright and receiving third degree burns. They give considerable insight into the stark realities of trying to survive nuclear war.
Ben Turner, London, UK

“He can be as good as some of the fast bowling greats that Pakistan have produced over the years,” said Zaheer.

Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Date dating first teenage tip was equally impressed, saying: “There was something in the wicket and they bowled well, especially Asif.”

But his side still have a good chance of winning a low-scoring game as they hold a 182-run lead with one wicket remaining.

“We made a brilliant comeback after not starting that well with the ball, but they came back at us very strongly in the second innings.

“We’d have liked to have had a specialist batsman at the
crease overnight but the bottom line is that we have to defend
whatever total we get,” Jayawardene commented.

Barring the on line dating tip of bad weather, a positive result either way is inevitable with three days of play still possible.

And the winners of the game will also take the dating advices sites in uk
series, with the opening Test having been drawn.
